Just before midnight, the driver was heading down Cornell Road and turning onto Melville Avenue when he struck the tree, police said.

The car came to rest in the parking lot of Fairfield Warde High School.

Officers on the scene detected a strong odor of alcohol on the breath of the driver, who was arrested for driving under the influence in 2017, police said.

Once in the ambulance, emergency personnel asked the driver his name and he said, “God.”

When asked if he had consumed any drugs or alcohol, police said he responded, “I took every drug in the book.”

Police have requested a search warrant for his medical records and the case is under investigation.
